The Sterick name is derived from the combined name of the two owners R.E. Sterling and Wyatt Hedrick (therefore Sterick) and that it was the tallest building in Memphis (and the entire south) when it opened in 1930. Because of the Depression and WW2, it was the last skyscraper built in Downtown in the building boom of the 1920s until the First Horizon Bank building at Madison/BB King Blvd. opened in 1964 - 34 years!
